Earth Month 2025. Our Power, Our Planet

Happy Earth Month! How will you celebrate? What action will you take?

Earth Day is on 22 April but there are things to get involved with all month… and beyond. EarthDay.org is the world’s largest environmental movement and this is their 55th year.

It’s a time to celebrate the progress we’ve made. It’s also a time to reflect on how we’re treating our home planet and what we can do better. Our collective action has massive ripple effects on our ecosystems – as well as the pace of business and government action.

This year the theme is Our Power, Our Planet. It’s a call to triple global renewable energy generation by 2030 – and to accelerate the transition to clean energy by creating electricity through solar, wind, hydro, tidal, and geothermal.

A bold but achievable goal. The technology is ready, the benefits are clear, and Australia is perfectly positioned to lead the charge.

We have the technology – and the responsibility – to create a cleaner, fairer, and more regenerative future.

Renewable energy isn’t just about cutting emissions. It’s about creating systems that regenerate rather than deplete. It’s about cleaner air, healthier communities, and our home planet sustaining life for generations to come.

Let’s dive into the challenges, opportunities, and how we can all contribute to creating a regenerative future.

The Challenges

We’re at a tipping point. Right now, about 80% of global energy still comes from fossil fuels, which are the biggest contributors to climate change.

We need to face the reality of the situation we’re in. We’re not on track to keep warming to less than 1.5°C (in fact 2024 was ~1.55°C). That means we need to act with urgency.

The Australian Context

Renewable energy made up ~40% of Australia’s energy mix in 2024. We regularly hit 50%+ days, and it hit a peak of 72.2% in September 2024. This is a huge leap from just 8% in 2010.

In Australia, solar and wind power have become some of the cheapest energy sources

There’s a lot of disinformation around where we’re currently at using the merchants of doubt playbook.

We have the climate solutions we need, but they need to be implemented. The biggest challenge is adaptive, not technical. It’s a change journey that requires bringing diverse stakeholders together. Local, national, and the global community… and it requires collaboration across governments, businesses, communities, and individuals.

The challenge isn’t about whether we can – it’s about if we will.

Earth Overshoot Day

This year Australia’s Earth Overshoot Day was on 19 March… this is the date when if everyone consumed like we do in Australia, we’d have used all the resources our planet can regenerate in the 2025 calendar year

By August we’ll have reached that point for the whole world. The specific day will be announced on 5 June. You’ve probably heard we need about 1.7 Earths to sustain our current consumption.

We need to rapidly transition to regenerative ways of living and doing business.

The Real Challenge: Behaviour Change & Political Will

While the technology is ready, human behaviour and policy decisions remain barriers to faster adoption.

Research shows that people are more likely to embrace renewable energy when they see it as a social norm or are incentivised through financial benefits. Valid concerns about cost of living and over-hyped messaging about energy reliability are slow public support for more ambitious policies.

This is an adaptive challenge… much more than it is a technical challenge. It means shifting mindsets, aligning policies, and refining priorities. The real challenge is political will and designing for behaviour change.

This includes how we engage and communicate the vision through to gamified digital experiences for daily habits, like Moroku’s platform.

We need consistent messaging, clear incentives, and policies that prioritise long-term benefits over short-term political gains.

The Opportunity

This year’s theme challenges us to rethink how we use our power – not just electrical power but the power of influence, choice, and collaboration – to create conditions where people and ecosystems can thrive together.

The good news is renewable energy is becoming more accessible and affordable every year…

  • The cost of solar power has dropped by over 80% in the last decade
  • Wind energy is now one of the cheapest sources of electricity worldwide
  • Clean energy jobs are growing rapidly, with over 12 million people already employed in renewable energy sectors globally

Renewable energy isn’t just good for the planet – it’s a win for everyone. It creates jobs, reduces energy costs, and boosts economic stability. It also reduces pollution, which means our air, water, and land are cleaner… and that results in us and our living systems being healthier.

If you care about the economy, energy security, saving money, your health and the health of our living systems – and hopefully all of these things – renewable energy delivers undeniable benefits for everyone. We don’t need a fearful scarcity mindset.

Take Action

The EarthDay.org campaign invites everyone around the globe to unite behind renewable energy, and to triple the global generation of clean electricity by 2030. How? They’ve created simple ways to get involved with four themes: educate, advocate, mobilise, and pledge.

I encourage you to take action – in your business and your personal life. Here are some more practical resources to help you on your journey.

Climate Education

EarthDay.org produced the Climate Education vs. The Climate Crisis report to “introduce climate education, evaluate the current state of climate education, and explore next steps”. It’s full of great insights and a clear action plan.

“The evidence is clear: climate education has the ability to combat the physical and psychological effects of the climate crisis and to prepare the next generation to thrive in the green economy.”

EarthDay.org has a bunch of great toolkits to make it easy to get started.

Climate Governance Initiative Australia with AICD

Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) has joined the Climate Governance Initiative as host of the Australian Chapter.

Climate governance is moving fast and the AICD is doing a great job of educating its members. As it says:

“Climate change is creating diverse risks and opportunities for organisations. Investors, regulators, employees and other stakeholders are now challenging directors to address climate risk at an organisational level.”

Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD)

Mandatory climate-related financial reporting for Group 1 companies started on 1 January 2025 and has already been flowing through to smaller companies in the supply chain over the past 12 months. The time for action is now!

The Climate Justice Playbook for Business

If you’re climate curious and just getting started – or already taking bold action, I recommend checking out The Climate Justice Playbook for Business: How to Centre Climate Action in Climate Justice by the B Corp Climate Collective for practical help on your journey.

SME Climate Hub

I’m proud that Dynamic4 has been a member of the B Corp Climate Collective and SME Climate Hub for many years now. The SME Climate Hub is a community and set of tools and resources helping small businesses take climate action by measuring and reducing their emissions.

Regenerative Leadership, Design & Innovation… for Happier Communities

I talk about regeneration… a lot. I don’t just talk about it though, I work alongside leaders and their teams to navigate complexity and solve problems that matter.

I love helping our clients design, build, and launch business models, products, and services that customers and teams love, make money, and do great things for people and our planet while increasing wellbeing.

Get my Ideas for Regenerative Leaders newsletter for more actionable ideas on regenerative leadership, design thinking, innovation, wellbeing, and purpose… to help you solve problems that matter.

Climate Action at Dynamic4

Our purpose at Dynamic4 is to help accelerate the transition to more regenerative ways of living and doing business.

A key part of this is making business and design decisions that help create the conditions for people and communities to be happier, have increasing quality of life, and live on a planet that is cleaner and healthier… while also being financially successful.

Climate action is core to what we do. We were one of the 533 B Corps who publicly committed to net zero emissions by the year 2030 at COP25 in 2019. We’ve been climate positive since 2010 – we consistently minimise our carbon impact and offset 20% more than our calculated emissions – and we’re always learning and improving. Our Impact Report show’s our approach.

Earth Month reminds us that we hold the power to shape a regenerative future – not just for ourselves but for generations to come.

Let’s collaborate to solve problems that matter! Book a free 15-minute discovery call.
