We were lucky to have Tarra van Amerongen from Atlassian speak at SydDT #102 last Thursday night. She spoke about how we as designers can use our curiosity and empathy skills to understand what our stakeholders really care about, and communicate the value and benefits of our ideas… so we can all succeed.
I loved the way Tarra focused on the importance of building empathy with our internal stakeholders and seeing the bigger picture. As designers, we naturally focus on advocating for our customers and the end users… and we need to bring that same empathy and curiosity to how we interact with our internal collaborators and stakeholders.
Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a fun night.
Thanks to Jomar Mandingiado for the great graphic recording. This initiative is a collaboration with Alan Chen and Diana Ayoub from Sh8peshifters and their Think Visual/Sh8peshifters Morning Meetups community. SydDT is a friendly environment for people to practice their live graphic recording skills.
A huge thanks to our sponsors… Michelle Cabanela/ThinkPlace, Sh8peshifters, and The Growth Habit. Lucas Mara was the lead organiser and MC for this one.
Our next meetup is SydDT #103 on 12 September. We’ve got Daniel Szuc visiting from Hong Kong and this is another in our design megameetup series as Design Connection #2. Susan Wolfe and I are the lead organisers. Sponsored by Thoughtworks, Sh8peshifters, Leapfrog Studio, and Dynamic4. Grab your ticket before it sells out!

For Sydney Design Thinking #102, we’re lucky to have Tarra van Amerongen talking about how we as designers can use our curiosity and empathy skills to understand and speak to what our stakeholders really care about. Because once we reframe the benefit of our idea, we’ll find much greater success.
