Mobile has become even more important for business over the past year. There’s now more internet traffic on mobiles than on personal computers. The experience your customers and potential customers have when using your website on their smartphone or tablet is more important than ever. Google has been very vocal on the importance of good mobile experiences:
“Mobile is critical to your business and will continue to be so – whether you’re blogging about your favorite sports team, working on the website for your community theater, or selling products to potential clients. Make sure visitors can have a good experience on your site when they’re visiting from their mobile devices!”
Over the past year, Google has gone beyond strongly recommending this and made several changes to the way search results are displayed on mobile. Back in November they introduced the “mobile-friendly” label to make it easier to identify websites that are mobile optimised when searching on mobile. They took this a step further in April with the much-feared “Mobilegeddon”. Google’s announcement was pretty clear: “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.” Reports of the actual impact of this have been mixed so far but you can be sure there will be more changes to come.
So What?
It’s a fair question. The importance of mobile depends on your business, your customers and the role your website plays in that interaction. Most of our clients receive 30% or more of their traffic from mobile devices – some over 50%. There are still a surprising number of Australian businesses (including very large brands) who have a very poor mobile experience. Getting this right is still a good way to differentiate from many of your competitors.
Australia has one of the highest smartphone adoption rates in the world – around 90%. According to Google, 48% of mobile users start on a search engine when researching products. If you want to be found online by all of those people using their mobiles, many of who haven’t heard of you yet – having a mobile-friendly website that is setup to convert is something you need to invest in.
