SydDT #101: AI Needs Design, More Than Design Needs AI with Chris Rollings

SydDT #101 AI Needs Design, More Than Design Needs AI with Chris Rollings

We were lucky to have Chris Rollings speak at SydDT #101 last Thursday night. He led a conversation on the role of design in shaping how we want AI to impact our lives – starting with service design to help businesses ethically explore and adopt AI.

Chris approached this topic in a refreshing way. Most genAI conversations over the past year have been dominated by fear – especially as it relates to the role of design. Instead, Chris focused on design as problem solving (everything is designed) and how we choose to experience the world.

Optimistic and hopeful without being naive or ignoring the risks. There are huge opportunity areas where design can help guide the evolution of AI-enabled products that are ethical and valuable… and he shared some practical suggestions to put that in action.

The graphic recording was done by Lily Tha. This initiative is a collaboration with Alan Chen and Diana Ayoub from Sh8peshifters and their Think Visual/Sh8peshifters Morning Meetups community. SydDT is a friendly environment for people to practice their live graphic recording skills.

Thanks to Stephen Rutter for doing the Acknowledgement of Country and saying a few words about his ancestors and NAIDOC Week.

Susan Wolfe also gave a shout out for SydDT #103 on 12 September. We’ve got Daniel Szuc visiting from Hong Kong and we’ll do this one as a design megameetup with our friends at CCX and EUX – Design Connection #2. More soon…

Finally, thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a fun night. Couldn’t make it or just want to relive it? It’s on Youtube now.

Kylie Mageropoulos did a great job as the lead organiser and MC for this one. A huge thanks to our sponsors… venue sponsor: Kate Linton/Thoughtworks, graphic recording: Sh8peshifters, organising sponsors: Lanson Partners and Dynamic4.

Our next meetup is SydDT #102: Get Seen & Get Your Best Ideas Built, With Skills You Already Have with Tarra van Amerongen on Thursday, 8 August. Thanks to Lucas Mara for being the lead organiser for this one. Grab your ticket now!
