Sydney Design Thinking #3 explored three topics. Anthony Quinn kicked things off by sharing stories of his personal experience and insights from effective design leaders – distilling key principles, practices, and methods.
This was followed by Ben Marr talking about conversion design and Lie Ming Tang sharing his thoughts on designing solutions with gamification.

Anthony Quinn – The Design Leader’s Playbook

Anthony is an award-winning design leader and entrepreneur with 20+ years’ experience helping organisations identify, develop and deliver on their value propositions. Has worked with startups, small business, corporations and individuals in the public, private and social sectors.
He was design director for Westpac Live – Westpac’s flagship digital customer relationship touchpoint. Westpac Live is used by over 3.5 million personal and business customers daily.
As Design Director at Value Machine, he works with Australian organisations with a strong social purpose to identify and deliver sustainable social value.
Ben Marr – Conversion Design
The son of an art director and artist, Ben was surrounded by art from an early age and taught that art was an expression of truth.
Self-taught as a user experience and visual designer, Ben looked for this expression of truth and found it in conversion design. The truth of numbers and results as an irrefutable metric brought clarity to a new framework for creative expression.
Recently this approach brought increases of over 400% for multiple projects for Commonwealth Bank and now Ben is applying this thinking to his own startup venture as founder and CEO of ‘hapu’.
Lie Ming Tang – Designing Solutions Using Gamification
The term “gamification” is enjoying an enormous hype and gaining widespread adoption.
However, what does gamificiation really mean? Why and when does it work and when doesn’t work? What should one consider when applying gamification? What are the key principles, design considerations and applications?
This talk will present background and underlying theories in gamification design. It aims to provide a strong foundation for interested designers and practitioners!
Lie Ming is a researcher at the University of Sydney in Human Computer Interaction focusing on technology to help people achieve their long term goals. Lie Ming is an ardent believer and promoter of self-efficacy, self-regulation and growth mindsets. He regularly speaks at university conferences and seminars on technology that motivates and engages people.
His recent work includes designing tangible user interfaces and applying gamification in nutrition, activity logging and e-learning systems.
Prior to postgraduate research, Lie Ming worked in Telecom OSS/BSS systems as computer scientist, consultant and later program manager. He worked on projects with tier-1 operators around the world including Telstra, Vodafone, TurkCell, VimpelCom, and M1.
