SydDT #92: Immersion, Emotion & The Future of Design with Dr Kate Gwynne

SydDT #92: Immersion, Emotion & The Future of Design… a great way to kick off another year of Sydney Design Thinking. A huge thanks to Dr Kate Gwynne for sharing her insights on the age of spatial computing, her embodied states framework for emotional engagement, and the important topic of ethics and digital design. This drew on her PhD research into the impact immersive technologies and experiences might have on how we live, work, and play.

Thanks to ThinkPlace and Dynamic4 for sponsoring this event… and thanks to everyone who came and made it a fun night! Couldn’t make it or just want to relive it? It’s on Youtube now.

Our next meetup is SydDT #93: Designing Resilient Business Models in a VUCA World on Thursday, 22 February. We’re lucky to have Michael Wilkens from Strategyzer visiting from Denmark. He’ll be sharing his thoughts on designing resilient business models in a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world.

This event is in collaboration with and has been organised by Stephen Summerhayes from Food Agility, Selena Griffith from Enactus Australia, and Ben Pecotich from Dynamic4.

It’s almost sold out, so grab your ticket now. See you there!

Meetup Announcement

Thursday, 15 February 2024 @ 6pm. ThinkPlace, Sydney

To kick off 2024, we’re exploring immersion, emotion, and the future of design with Dr Kate Gwynne. Come join us for some fun conversations with interesting people keen on design thinking.

With the Apple Vision Pro planned for release this year, the age of spatial computing is now upon us. What will the impact of this and other immersive technologies and experiences be on how we live, work, and play? Dr Kate Gwynne will seek to answer this question, drawing on her PhD research undertaken at the School of Arts and Media at UNSW.

Kate will highlight how understanding immersive technologies through the lens of emotion is the key to designing impactful experiences for users. The session will conclude by thinking about the future of design and how we can take advantage of the possibilities of new technologies while maintaining ethical approaches to working with them.

Dr Kate Gwynne

Dr Kate Gwynne is a digital strategist, content specialist, and emerging tech researcher. She was recently awarded her PhD from UNSW where she researched XR technology (i.e. immersive virtual reality) and its intersection with AI and web3. For her thesis she developed an original framework, based on interdisciplinary design thinking, for unlocking the deeper emotional possibilities of immersive environments.

Prior to her time in academia, Kate worked at the forefront of new platforms and technologies in leading global creative agencies (M&C Saatchi, BBDO, and Dentsu mcgarrybowen).
