How’s things? I hope you had a fun week and are ready for a new month š
Over the past few weeks, Iāve been working with the CEO and leadership team of one of our NFP clients to help them design their strategic innovation portfolio and investment approach.
Weāve been very focused on the change journey for this work. That means engaging a range of stakeholders including the broader team and the board to genuinely co-design how this might look.
Thereās major disruption, regulatory reform, and uncertainty in several parts of the sector weāre working in. Thanks to great leadership, a diversified strategy, and solid financial reserves, weāre in a great position to innovate.
The path forward is to strategically explore opportunities for diversified growth and scale, while keeping an eye on disruption to the core business.
This also means always ensuring alignment with the organisationās purpose, vision, strategic priorities, theory of change, and strengths & assets.
Innovation isnāt efficient though.
Itās about taking calculated risks. Itās about failing and learning from things that donāt go as hoped to increase the likelihood the next thing will succeed. Not all failures are equal. How and when we fail matter.
Iām not into failure, but Iām very much into learning. I always play to win ā in a collaborative way and have fun doing it. When the phrase āfail fastā is used, it often leaves out the important part⦠āto succeed soonerā.
If itās not going to work out, we want it to happen early, and before weāve wandered down a path of overinvesting time, money, and energy in the wrong thing. And burnt out in the attempt.
Itās essential to create an environment with the psychological safety to experiment, learn, iterate, and build creative confidence. The innovation mindset.
At Dynamic4, we have a foundational philosophy, set of principles, and an overarching approach to innovation, but no two contexts are identical. Itās always about meeting people where theyāre at and working alongside them on the journey.
While Iāve been leading, designing, and delivering strategic change and innovation for 30+ years in global banks, startups/social enterprises, and NFPs ā every context is different and thereās been many variations of the process to match.
Reflecting helps me with clarity, remembering hard-won lessons, and to build empathy with the many stakeholders who come to this with their own experience, perspectives, and pressures.
Check out my full post where I share some of my reflections on leading innovation with a focus on creating the conditions, building the mindset, and working out where to explore first.
Thereās no one true path for innovation. There are always trade-offs, thereās always risk.
But there are ways to approach innovation to increase the chance of success and manage risk.
Are you creating the conditions for innovation?

Bridging Now to Next is the theme of National Reconciliation Week this year. It calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
Letās Collaborate
AtĀ Dynamic4, weĀ specialise in regenerative leadership, design, and innovation with a focus on purpose and wellbeing. We do that by working alongside leaders and their teams to navigate complexity and solve problems that matter.
We love helping our clients design, build, and launch ideas that customers and teams love, make money, and do great things for people and our planet while increasing wellbeing.
This draws on myĀ 30+ years of bringing together strategy, design, and tech to lead, design, and deliver strategic change in financial services, digital & tech, health & fitness, and building startups/social enterprises.
What do we actually do? Key ways we help is through coaching & advice, innovation sprints, and designing & delivering leadership, design thinking & innovation programs.Ā My bookĀ Solve Problems That MatterĀ is a good way to get started.
Our approach builds personal, team, and organisational capability to solve problems that matter with more:
